Advancing Faculty Diversity Grants

Academic Affairs is proud to be working on the following projects to promote faculty diversity and inclusivity on the UC Santa Cruz campus, through the support of various grants.

Recruitment

  • Improving Application Diversity and Impacts of Contributions to Diversity
UCOP award of $497,000 for years 2019-20 and 2020-21
This project launched a pilot program of first-round screening in faculty searches based on the statement of contributions to diversity, equity, and inclusion, it introduced the use of a rubric for evaluation of these statements, and it encouraged searches to have finalist candidates give a short talk on how they would contribute to diversity, equity, and inclusion at UCSC if they were hired.

UCOP award of $135,140 for years 2020-21 and 2021-22 funded a faculty workgroup who, in collaboration with faculty at UC Merced, reviewed the research literature on inclusive hiring, producing a website of resources. This work seeded the 2021-22 proposal for an Equity Advocate program.

 Retention

Originally funded by UCOP in 2019-20 & 2020-21, now funded by CP/EVC Kletzer, the Faculty Community Networking (FCN) group was created to provide structures for faculty community, development, and support.

  • Mining Text for Bias in Written Comments of Student Evaluations of Teaching

UCOP award of $186,100 for years 2021-22, 2022-23, and 2023-24 to examine SETs for evidence of bias in free response comments, in collaboration with UC Riverside and UC Davis, and to assess whether the change in SET questions reduced bias in the questions.

UCOP award of $246,936 for years 2021-22 and 2022-23 to launch an Equity Advocate program at UC Santa Cruz, in collaboration with work strengthening the Equity Advocate program at UC Merced.
